Rod pump controller WellSim

The WellSim Rod Pump Controller is designed for efficient real-time control of sucker rod pumping units based on continuous analysis of a mathematical model of the well. The controller generates surface and downhole dynagraph cards, protects both surface and downhole equipment, and calculates well production.

Description

WellSim continuously collects and processes data from the pumping unit and well environment, providing operators with a clear and comprehensive view of well performance. High-speed processing allows all calculations to be performed in real time, enabling immediate response to changing operating conditions.

The system is designed for reliable operation in harsh environments, including desert climates and extreme northern conditions, making it suitable for deployment across a wide range of oilfield operations.

WellSim supports integration with load sensors, position sensors, inclinometers, and other external signal sources, allowing precise monitoring of pumping equipment and well dynamics. The controller can also integrate with auxiliary equipment such as flow meters, echo sounders, and downhole measurement systems, using their data for calculations, control algorithms, and remote monitoring. In addition, WellSim can operate as a virtual flow meter, calculating production without the need for dedicated flow measurement devices.

An intuitive graphical interface allows operators—either locally via the integrated display or remotely via computer — to easily monitor key well parameters, including:

  • Surface dynagraph cards
  • Downhole dynagraph cards
  • Downhole equipment condition
  • Pump intake pressure
  • Pump fillage
  • Liquid production rate
  • Loads on rod string and pumping equipment

Clear visualization of well performance enables faster decision-making and more efficient well management.

WellSim supports both manual and fully automated well operation. In automatic mode, the controller uses the well mathematical model to dynamically adjust pump operation and maintain optimal performance.

Automatic control modes include:

  • Pump fillage control
  • Pump intake pressure control
  • Liquid level control
  • Timer-based operation
  • Scheduled operation
  • Emergency protection setpoints
  • Remote control via SCADA

These intelligent control strategies ensure maximum production efficiency while protecting pumping equipment from damaging operating conditions.

WellSim supports Modbus RTU communication and integrates easily with modern SCADA systems. The controller also operates as a full network device supporting TCP/IP, with access available through a convenient web-based interface.

Multiple controllers can be connected into a unified network using communication technologies such as FM radio, GPRS, Wi-Max, and other industrial communication channels. This enables operators to monitor and control all field assets from a central location, forming the foundation of a digital or “smart” oilfield infrastructure.
